Feldenkrais Classes

The Feldenkrais Method is an approach for improving both physical and mental functioning through the exploration of body movement patterns and the use of attention. It is based on the brain’s innate capacity for learning and the potential for life-long development and growth. Movement is used as the medium toward understanding our habits and identifying, learning and acquiring alternatives that promote ease and well-being.

Origins and development

The Feldenkrais Method was developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), who was born in Russia and emigrated to Israel at the age of 13 (on foot!). After receiving degrees in mechanical engineering, he earned his D.Sc. in physics at the Sorbonne in Paris. Physically active, Feldenkrais played soccer and practiced martial arts. He studied with Kano Jigoro, the originator of judo and in 1936 became one of the first Europeans to earn a black belt in that discipline. A chronic knee injury prompted him to apply his knowledge of physics, body mechanics, neurology, learning theory and psychology to the body and mind. His investigations resulted in the formulation of a unique synthesis of science and aesthetics that is the Feldenkrais Method.

Benefits

The Feldenkrais Method aims to improve physical and mental functioning. It is applicable to anyone wanting to enhance the quality of their everyday life and activities. People from many different walks of life do Feldenkrais. They report results of increased vitality, enhancement of self-image, better breathing and posture, greater flexibility and range of motion, and reduction, if not disappearance of pain. By bringing attention to the process of movement, students usually feel lighter and more graceful, and have greater ease and effectiveness in turning their intentions to action.

Feldenkrais Method

What Karine has to say

I discovered the Feldenkrais Method in the course of my exploration of various forms of bodywork and I was so impressed that I started the training straight after my MA. I have found the Method to be hugely beneficial to my life as a whole: in my dance practice, loosening tight joints, improving my posture, core stability , movement coordination and fluidity; in my health generally, freeing me from recurring and crippling migraines and improving my breathing. I have also experienced the Feldenkrais work as a deeply transformative process, not only effectively reorganising inefficient and potentially harmful movement patterns but also positively affecting self-image and thought patterns.

I offer one-to-one sessions tailored to suit particular individual needs. The Method has limitless applications from -relief from chronic muscular tension and associated pain, relief from stress, increased strength and flexibility, recovery from injuries, neurologically-based movement difficulties such as Parkinson’s and cerebral palsy- to improving the performance of athletes, dancers, musicians, actors…

I believe in a holistic approach to health that involves relieving symptoms, as well as exploring causes, so that people become able to re-gain or discover their innate ability to understand and be responsible for their own wellbeing. My work strongly focuses on education. As Moshe Feldenkrais often said: “If you know what you are doing, you can do what you want.”

The Feldenkrais Method has something to offer to everyone, because life is movement and if you improve the way you move, you feel improvement in your life as a whole…
